Two out of three family's today own at least one
dog. More and more families consider their dog as a member of the
family. Although this is usually a positive thing, it is also the cause of
many dog problem behaviors. Even though a dog owner may consider his or
her dog as a member of the family, the dog will still react as a dog. One
of the most devastating things that can happen to many people is being forced to
give up the dog they love because of problem behaviors that became too much for
them to deal with. Most of the time, these problem behaviors could have
been avoided entirely or corrected if the family or dog owner had simply decided
to train their dog (with the help of a qualified
trainer) as soon as they could arrange for a class or private
training.
Another mistake made by many new dog
owners is believing they can train their dog themselves or by reading a
book. Some books can be helpful, but I have yet to find the book that can watch
a pet owner, ask questions of that pet owner and react to the pet owner.
Dog problems arise when owners through misunderstanding dog behavior, react
unknowingly in a way that actually sets the wrong behavior in the dog.
Okay, so now we've established why most
dog owners need to be trained. The next step would be to understand
what to look for in a qualified dog trainer! This is very important with
the onslaught of so many self ordained experts today. I've made a list of
do's and don'ts below for you to consider when searching for a qualified dog
trainer.
My goal as a
trainer
is to teach dog owners a no-force method of dog training. I
teach owners to "teach" their dogs. The best dog owner is a
patient and knowledgeable dog owner. I believe in training a
dog owner the skills needed to control their dog without using
force. Most dogs that run out of the yard after something and
get hit by automobiles are owned by dog owners that never learned
and developed the skill of controlling their pet off leash.
I instruct dog owners in understanding how to keep their dog's
attention as the inability to hold their canine's attention in
distracting situations is usually the culprit when something
devastating has happened to a pet.
**
I will evaluate and test a dog owner's dog or
puppy's temperament to help them have the best and most secure pet they can.
Many times dog owners are unaware of the importance of understanding their dog's
personality and temperament needs. Training is geared toward YOUR
families' needs and desires.
**
I will evaluate their dog and advise the
dog owner on methods and training that can be used to help modify and possibly
entirely do away with problem behaviors. I work with children
to help correct any problem behaviors the family is experiencing.
